At the northern side of the centre of Groningen city, along the Oosterhamrikkade, 3 apartment buildings have been realised for Geveke. Regarding possible earthquakes (PGA = 0,10g) research has been done into the consequences for the main load-bearing structures of these buildings. The forces proved to be so large, that a solution with base isolation was the only option. This solution has been completely integrated into the design up to the level of implementation. However, whilst developing this solution, construction had already started. This led to base isolation being applied later under the foundation of two of the buildlings. In order to construct this, a basement was dug out underneath the buildings, after which the piles were cut and a 'slider' was installed at every pile. In doing so, the building has been 'cut loose' of the foundation and made earthquake resistant.

For the third apartment building base isolation has been integrated during construction. We chose to implement base isolation between the foundation beams and the pile foundation. The entire main load-bearing structure and the tectonic structure has been analysed and calculated by using a NLTH-analysis in the computer programme Abaqus. All calculations and the documents of implementation were reviewed by prof. Calvi from italy by order of NAM.

At the location of the former FC Groningen football stadium, a building with 72 earthquake resistant apartments has been designed, entirely in line with the football tradition. To make the apartment building earthquake resistant, sliders have been applied between the lowered parking basement and the first floor. The building and the soil can now move independently from each other, to safeguard the safety of the residents in case of an earthquake. The technique has been made visible in the staircases. 
 

Taxicentrale Oosterhamrikkade

Just North of the city centre of Groningen, along the Oosterhamrikkade, this apartment building has been realised. Regarding the earthquakes (PGA = 0,11g) research has been done into the consequences for the main load-bearing structures of this building. The forces are of such size that a solution with base isolation was deemed the most economical. This solution has been completely integrated into the design up to the level of implementation. We chose to implement base isolation between the foundation beams and ground floor. The main load-bearing structure and the tectonic design has been analysed and calculated via an NLTH-analysis in the program Abaqus.
 

Jakobijn

In the centre of Groningen city at the Boterdiep, an apartment building has been developed with 46 apartements called De Jakobijn. The building has a U-form and consists of 4 floors and a basement.
Since it is situated in an earthquake zone (PGA = 0,08g), base isolation has been integrated in the design of the building, to make it earthquake resistant. In the building, the base isolation has been applied between the foundation beams and the basement floors.
